Candles and Soot Stains
11/15/1999
There have recently been a lot of complaints about soot stains around air ducts in the home. Much of the blame for these stains has been placed on the common household candle. In addition, there have been many reports on other candle hazards, such as indoor air pollution, cracking candle containers, etc.
We became particularly concerned about the stain issue because it seems that we have been burning a lot of candles for a long time in this country and these stains have only recently been showing up, sometimes after only a short period of candle usage. One complaint that we received noted that the problem began only after the installation of a new Trane heating unit. After doing extensive research we found that there may be an issue with charring insulation in new heating systems. This became a problem after the use of asbestos for the insulation was discontinued. Oddly enough, this seems to coincide with the occurrence of soot around air vents!
