Vanity Fair - Won't Cancel Subscription?

name: N. E.

city: 62703

problem: 01/12/2000

I was subscribed to Vanity Fair for many years but decided recently not to renew. They sent me many reminders which I ignored as junk mail. Since no magazines came, I considered the matter closed. Now they have turned me over to a collection agency, the National Credit Audit Corporation, who assures me that if I send them $34, "the remainder of your subscription will be reinstated". I don't WANT it reinstated. I don't WANT the damned magazine. This is extortion! Evidently, Vanity Fair is going to get its money one way or the other. I can't imagine how many people they've intimidated into renewing a subscription they don't want!

I called the collection agency and they said my file "could not be located" -- so I wonder if the magazines are paying some collection agency a fee just to send out scare letters, with no intention of following it up legally.)

I've written the Federal Trade Commision about this and am looking for more consumer fraud groups to write to. This is extortion, pure and simple.
